Axles

All front wheel drive cars have two drive axles, one for each front wheel. A special type of universal joint, called a Constant Velocity Universal Joint (or just CV Joint for short) transmits the power to each wheel, while allowing the wheels to turn from right to left. These CV Joints have grease inside of them. This grease is held in place by CV Joint Boots, rubber coverings which hold the grease in and keep dirt and moisture out.

When There’s an Issue with your Axles

The telltale sign of a bad axle is that it makes a clicking sound when you turn a corner, however it will be fairly silent when you are driving straight ahead. This issue should be addressed rather quickly, however, because if any of the CV Joint Boots is torn vital lubrication slings out of them and dirt and moisture gets into the joint. In a short period of time (in a few weeks or as short as a few days) the axle could be destroyed by the debris that enters the joint.

How We Can Help

To prevent these issues, bring your car into Tilden if you think your axles are going bad. We can replace CV Joint Boots and renew the grease which helps keep the dirt and moisture out of the joints. This maintenance should be completed every 50,000 miles in order to ensure the axle assembly is properly functioning.
