The transmission of a car is the main component responsible for converting the speeds and torques along the drivetrain. This is meant to optimize efficiency of the engine leading to lower fuel consumption while providing maximum performance. The two types of transmissions used in vehicles are manual (or stick-shift) and automatic. With manual transmission the driver pushes the clutch pedal to disconnect the engine from the input shaft of the transmission and selects the gear they want to go in based on their desired speed. In automatic (the far more popular type of transmission) the car automatically adjusts gears based on engine torque without the need for a clutch pedal.
When Should You Have Your Transmission Inspected
The transmission is by far one of the most important parts of a car and without it essentially is useless. There are a few signs you should look for to see if your transmission needs repair. Firstly, if your vehicle will not move at all or shift when it’s cold it’s a telltale sign that there is something if malfunctioning with your transmission. Another sign is if your vehicle is late in up shifting, slams into gear when it finally up shifts, or is experiencing any shifting problem in general. Finally if your transmission is making whirring or whining noises it is a good indication that something is wrong.
